Free Diaper Program

The diaper program, which is currently in its research pilot phase, has been established in collaboration with the Office of Child Services (OCS). The primary objective of this program is to showcase the numerous advantages that can be derived from assisting families in reducing their diaper-related expenses. Through this initiative, qualifying families are provided with complimentary diapers as a means of support and encouragement. This endeavor is aimed at alleviating financial burdens while also shedding light on the positive impact such assistance can have on the well-being of families within our community. Eligible families will receive 100 diapers per child, once a month.

Useful Data Outcomes

One in three families struggle to provide enough diapers to change their child frequently enough. Some children are disproportionately affected by diaper need, particularly children who are Black, Indigenous, or Latinx, and children whose parents are immigrants, lack a high school diploma, or experience economic insecurity and unemployment. Lack of sufficient diapers can lead to health consequences, such as diaper rash, severe dermatitis, infections, and hospitalization. This gap can also lead to other severe consequences, such as high levels of stress, anxiety, and guilt among caregivers; lack of childcare options; and caregiver economic instability from missing too many days of work or missing other opportunities to increase economic independence (Randles 2017).

Statistics

  • 56% of parents who received diaper assistance have had to miss work at some point because of an inadequate supply of diapers.

  • Parents who were unable to access childcare due to a lack of diapers missed an average of 4 days of work per month.

  • Adequate diapers could prevent $4.3 Million in medical costs in just one year.

  • Diapers are the 4th highest expenditure for families with infants, amounting to 11% of monthly income on average.

Qualifications

To qualify for the free diaper program, families must be at or below 200% of the federal poverty limit for the area. Households need to complete CAP application, provide verification of income (paystubs, bank statements, benefit letter, Venmo, etc.), and bring photo ID.
